JUNK MILES

Folks! Good to see you again.

In a month I’ll be marking four years since my college graduation. That’s four years since I said goodbye to NIRCA eligibility; four years since running (plodding, really) for Team Blitz at William & Mary. Everyone I ran with is graduated and gone. My name is naught but a footnote, a strange face peering forth from a Strava page long-defunct1. I’m still not a math guy, but I think my stats hold up on this one: I’m old now.

I’m not writing this to get misty about the glory days or to philosophize about the unceasing rush of time or to complain about my various back problems. The back pain persists, but I’ve got a few more decades before I’m allowed to start yelling at clouds. Still, things have changed since ‘22.

Okay, enough beating around the bush: Reasonably Speedy’s getting a rebrand. I still love NIRCA and love keeping up with what’s happening (We’re running 3:52 1500s now?? That’s what we’re doing??), but I’ve now fully transitioned from participant to observer. I’m just a fan! But there’s a lot in running I’m a fan of, and a lot—NIRCA and otherwise—I find myself itching to write about.

Introducing: JUNK MILES.

The new moniker means I’m broadening the scope a bit. I’ll be writing about running, not just NIRCA running, but also not not NIRCA running. Got it? Reasonably Speedy will live on within Junk Miles, sort of a rectangle/square thing.

If you’re looking for pure NIRCA coverage, I can’t recommend CRC Coaches Poll highly enough. They’ve done a wonderful job covering the performance news without overlooking the less quantifiable happenings (the vibes, if you will) that makes NIRCA so special to begin with. Check em out!

I hope most of you will stick around, though, even if I’m shifting gears slightly. I promise the spirit of Reasonably Speedy will remain even as my club-or-die purism slackens a bit. Don’t get me wrong, though—it’s still club or die. Bury me in my Blitz singlet!

I’ll be back with more updates soon, this time under a new banner. In the meantime, see y’all on the ‘net!
